At the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, the New York Islanders made DiPietro the first goaltender in League history to be taken with the first overall pick. In 1999-00 the agile netminder collected an array of awards of Boston University- New England MVP, New England Rookie of the Year, team co-MVP, Hockey East Rookie of the Year and Hockey East All-Star Team. That season, DiPietro posted an 18-5-5 record and 2.44 goals-against average. Dipietro, who possesses excellent reflexes and puck-handling skills, made his Islander debut in 2000-01 , notching a 3.49 GAA in 20 games. During the 2001-02 season, DiPietro played in the AHL for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, going 30-22-7 with a 2.37 GAA. This 2003-04 he will be getting tested playing as the main goalie but Garth Snow will push the youngster to tack the job away from him.
